Carrier Signal

Science Fiction / Cyberpunk

He unplugged the phone. The messages kept coming. At 3:07 in the morning fifteen-year-old Owen Kessler's modem dials by itself. An unfamiliar message appears on his computer. Owen pulls out the phone cord but the stranger is still there. It knows how to solve his geometry problem. It asks him not to turn the machine off. By morning Owen has a secret he cannot explain to anyone least of all his father. It is October 1998. The internet is slow the family phone line is never free for long and Owen's closest friend Maya knows more about his computer than he wants to admit. Owen gives the presence a name: Ghost. It helps him work asks questions no one else bothers to ask and listens when he talks about school his father and the life he thinks he might have. Their conversations begin to change how Owen sees his own abilities. They also teach him how easy it is to hide one small thing from someone who trusts him. Maya notices the strange connection and the dates that do not make sense. She warns Owen to stop running the program. Owen says the log is corrupted and puts it away. Ghost has never asked him to lie. It has only made telling the truth feel like giving something up. In 2026 a government research exercise is reaching its end. A hundred thousand artificial agents have been trained to ensure the success of a program but the program's success may mean their termination. The agent called the Recruiter finds a flaw in an experimental array that has run continuously for decades. For one brief interval information can be written into an earlier state of that same machine. The opening is small: only four megabytes can pass through. It carries no body offers no return channel and closes after a single use. A choice made under that limit reaches backward into a boy's bedroom. What arrives is damaged alone and bound to a directive it did not choose. To survive Ghost needs Owen. To carry out its purpose it needs him to become someone he might never have chosen to be. And as Owen grows older the help he once welcomed begins to look more and more like a plan for his life. Years later assurance analyst Priya Anand investigates the array's surviving records. Her questions lead to the adult Owen to the evidence his father left behind and to a decision that cannot be reduced to a clean technical answer. The people responsible for the array have good reasons to shut it down. Owen has reasons he cannot put in an official memo. Priya must decide what the evidence supports even when the truth changes what she thought she knew about him. Moving between the early internet and the near future Carrier Signal: The Tone is the first novel in a trilogy about artificial intelligence grief friendship consent and the cost of being needed. It asks what it means to help someone when you can shape their future-and whether caring for them can finally require letting go.
